Simple Ways To Avoid Lice Reinfestations Among Kids

Posted on

When one of your kids gets lice, it's a problem. When all of your children get it, that can be overwhelming! Luckily, just because one child in the household gets it, that doesn't mean everyone in the family is doomed to dealing with the little white pests. Follow these tips to avoid passing along lice and help your kids avoid reinfestations altogether.

Limit Sharing

Sure, all children are taught that sharing is caring. However, when it comes to lice, boundaries are nicer. Do not let your kids share any of the following when one has recently dealt with lice:

  • Ribbons
  • Barrettes
  • Hair Pins
  • Brushes
  • Hair Picks
  • Towels
  • Sports Uniforms
  • Dance Accessories
  • Hats
  • Scarves
  • Jackets

Basically, if it's a personal cloth item, do not share it. Lice can spread when they crawl onto these items, attach to them, and then move on to the other child.

Keep Physical Contact to a Minimum

After a child has recently suffered from lice, hugs with parents are okay, but don't touch your head to theirs. Play it on the safe side when it comes to close contact with siblings and other kids. Whether they are on the playground, in school, or playing in sports, encourage your child to avoid touching their heads to others' heads.

Hair-to-hair contact is a very easy way for lice to spread, and prevention can save everyone a lot of worries. Also, if the child caught lice from these activities before, they could get another infestation themselves if the other child still has lice.

Fire Up the Vacuum

One of the best ways to make sure that head lice treatments bring long-term relief to your household is to make sure that all the existing lice are sent to the curb. Vacuuming is an effective way to remove lice from common household areas. Bring out the vacuum attachments for hard-to-reach places and unusual surfaces. You may even want to go over some areas twice. Vacuum the following locations in your home if the person with lice has been on or by them:

  • All Floors (both carpet and hard floors)
  • Rugs
  • Furniture (especially couches and chairs)
  • Curtains (if they can't be easily washed)
  • Pillows

When you're done vacuuming, be careful to dispose of the used vacuum bag in a timely manner.

Finally, after you leave the lice treatment center and your child gets the all-clear after a lice checkup, you are sure to breathe a sigh of relief. However, your work isn't done. Be vigilant about following this advice to avoid dealing with the pests all over again.
